The following is a list of skills you are
encouraged to work on with your child during the summer months.

If your child is a returning preschooler, please practice...

  • Counting to 10 out loud
  • Counting 10 objects
  • Quantifying objects (example: give me 1 block, give me 2 blocks, etc...)
  • Identifying numerals 1-10
  • Identifying letters
  • Recognizing first name among a field of 3 others
  • Identifying colors
  • Identifying shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon)

*Helpful hints: Read as often as possible with your child; take time to look at pictures and discuss what is happening. The summer months are the perfect time for your child to practice many concepts through playing. Taking a trip to the park is a great time to practice different language concepts such as under, on top of, highest, lowest, first, last, shortest, longest, etc... You can also practice counting while swinging on the swing or search for different colors around the park.

If your child is going to kindergarten, please practice...

  • Properly using a pencil, crayon, and scissors
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Knowing the difference between letters and numbers
  • Forming letters
  • Drawing a recognizable picture
  • Managing bathroom needs without assistance
  • Re-telling a simple story
  • Forming simple shapes
  • Naming uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Counting to 20
  • Knowing letter sounds

*Helpful hints: There are many simple ways to help your child practice these skills. Help your child write and draw by providing him or her with a variety of writing tools such as crayons, markers, chalk, etc...

*Take plenty of time to read books with your child. Be sure to pick a story your child is interested in.

*Always encourage your child to be independent and try tasks before asking for help.
